No. 1 star — Michael McDonald: The bantamweight continued his undefeated UFC run with a first-round knockout of one-time WEC champ Miguel Torres. After the fight, he showed true class by sending several tweets to Torres to thank him for the fight.

No. 2 star — Ben Rothwell: When Rothwell weighed in, he showed off a sleeker shape than he’s ever had in the Octagon. He then proved the new body was not just for looks as he knocked out Brendan Schaub in just over a minute.

No. 3 star — Travis Browne: “Hapa” saved the preliminary card from being all decisions by ruining Chad Griggs’ UFC debut. Browne used knees to knock Griggs down, then a beautiful arm triangle to submit Griggs in the first round.

Hector Lombard’s entrance into the UFC is being treated as a big deal as evidenced by his headlining slot at UFC on Fox 4 this summer. His bout with Brian Stann is a testament to the UFC’s thoughts on his level as a fighter, and it could lead to a very quick rise up the ranks.

The former Bellator Middleweight Champion has gone unbeaten in 25 straight fights dating back to 2007. He’s been claimed by many to be one of the very best middleweights in the world, and a legitimate challenge for Anderson Silva. If he defeats Stann on August 4, he may just get an opportunity to prove those believers right, as UFC President Dana White said on Thursday that a title shot may just be on the line for Lombard.

“When you talk about cleaning out a division, there’s always another guy who comes up, even for a guy like Anderson,” White said (transcribed by MMAJunkie.com). “We just brought in Lombard. [If] Lombard beats Stann … that [title] fight makes sense.”

It would be a very quick rise to the top for a fighter who hasn’t yet competed inside the Octagon, but nevertheless it’s a potentially huge opportunity for him to make an immediate statement in the UFC.

Penick’s Analysis: The UFC’s middleweight division has a lot of fighters with partial claims to being the number one contender, but much like the lightweight division there isn’t a clear-cut name that deserves a title shot after Chael Sonnen. A number of fighters will be attempting to boost their claim to the spot this summer, with Michael Bisping vs. Tim Boetsch and Mark Munoz vs. Chris Weidman likely to produce a potential challenger. Because of that, a win over Stann by Lombard may make him the most deserving. It would be a very big and legitimate win, and it would move him to a 26-fight unbeaten streak. It would be hard to argue against him at that point.

While most of the hype around UFC 145 has been around Jon Jones and Rashad Evans, there are 11 other bouts on the card. What questions will they answer? Read on.

Are the young phenoms with similar names the real deal? Michael McDonald and Rory MacDonald are both barely old enough to buy a beer after their fights, but have 28 bouts with just two losses total. McDonald’s bout with Miguel Torres will show if he is ready to jump towards contender status, while the last time MacDonald fought with such a bright light on him, he was knocked out with seven seconds left to go by Carlos Condit.

What did the loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira do to Brendan Schaub’s mental make-up? If you’ve been reading Ben Fowlkes’ excellent series, “The Hurt Business,” you know Schaub is a fighter who needs to train his psyche as much as his takedown defense. The loss to Nogueira would be tough to take for any fighter, as Schaub looked close to a win before Nog came back with the Brazilian crowd roaring behind him. Perhaps the loss steeled Schaub for his next bout. Perhaps it shook him. We’ll find out Saturday.

Can Chad Griggs handle the jump in competition? In Strikeforce, Chad Griggs’ last three bouts were against Valentijn Overeem, who had dropped two out of five bouts heading into their fight, Gian Villante, who is 2-2 in Strikeforce, and Bobby Lashley, the former pro wrestler who hasn’t faced the best in competition. Now, Griggs will face undefeated Travis Browne. Will he win his UFC debut?

What did being cut do to (or for) Miguel Torres? In December, Miguel Torres was cut from the UFC after making a joke about a rape van. He was welcomed back after doing charity work and making a full apology. In his first fight back, Torres wasn’t given an easy bout. Instead, he will have to fight McDonald, the aforementioned phenom. Can Torres show he’s still a relevant bantamweight?

Is it possible for Jones/Evans to live up to the hype? This fight has been talked about for more than a year. Even Jones and Evans are sick of talking about each other, about their coaches, about their former friendship, and about what they plan to do to each other. Now that they’re so close to actually punching each other in the face, expectations are so lofty that nothing short of a Dan Henderson/Mauricio “Shogun” Rua-esque bout will satisfy. Looking at Evans’ last few fights, that’s unlikely.

Following a win over Thiago Silva at UFC on Fuel 2 earlier this month, Alexander Gustafsson was showered with praise from many corners, with some comparing him favorably to UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones.

In the lead up to his own April fight last week at UFC 145, Jones commented on that comparison, and while he disagrees with those who find similarities between the two, he did express respect for the young Swede, and expects to see him get a title shot soon.

“I don’t think it’s appropriate people are comparing us,” Jones at the final pre-fight press conference for UFC 145 (transcribed by MMAWeekly.com. “The only similarities that we have is we’re both tall, and that’s it. We’re completely different athletes. I have a wrestler base where I shoot and throw from the clinch, I kick fast and accurate; he has really great boxing.”

“I think he’s pretty close to a title shot. I think maybe if he wins two more fights against some top guys, maybe like Lyoto [Machida] or Rashad [Evans] or somebody, somebody that can push him in different categories.”

Jones feels Gustafsson’s got very little left to prove before earning his shot, but there were a couple of specific types of fights he expects to see Gustafsson get past before he gets his shot.

“I’d like to see him against another wrestler and I would like to see him against a worthy striker. Then I think a title shot would be very appropriate,” Jones said.

“I like his demeanor, though. He has some swagger. He exudes winning from the second he steps in the cage. I think the kid has the potential to be a star.”

Penick’s Analysis: Jones and Gustafsson just might be headed for a collision later this year, as Jones faces his next challenger in Dan Henderson this summer. Gustafsson may be next in line should he score one more victory, and we’ll see what the two of them have to offer one another inside the cage. The two of them are both very young, and immensely talented, and a title fight between the two could be one of the great battles of this next generation of fighters.

Dionicio writes: I have a question regarding the future match between George St-Pierre and Carlos Condit. These two were exciting fighters making their way to the belt. However when they got a taste of that gold they became technical bores. I am a big fan of ground work and technique but these guys, with the help of Greg Jackson, have me thinking that Carlos “The Natural Born Killer” Condit vs. George “No-rush” (I should petition this) St-Pierre should be labeled “the most technically boring fight to come.” I know there may be disagreements but tell me it’s not true?

A: It’s not true. As a matter of fact, not only is it not true, but it saddens me that people even take this stance against athletes fighting to win.

First of all, Carlos Condit is one of, if not the most consistently entertaining fighters in mixed martial arts. It blows my mind that a fighter like him can spend ten years of his life finishing fighters left and right, go the distance just twice and still be written off as a “technical bore.”

Heading into the Nick Diaz fight, most people figured Condit would lose because on paper his usual unbelievably aggressive style would play right into Diaz’s hands. Condit and his team put together a style to counter Diaz’s pressure fighting tactics and they got vilified for it; I think that’s ridiculous.

The fact is there are some fighters that you just can’t beat in an entertaining fashion and Nick Diaz is one of them. Knocking Nick Diaz out is more or less off the table, so aggressively pursuing that type of finish is mostly a fruitless endeavor. The Diaz brothers routinely set records with the amount of punches they land in fights so standing in the pocket and trying to outland them there is obviously a mistake too. Nick Diaz is probably a better grappler than Carlos Condit, so he probably wasn’t going to win there either.

Really, if Condit were to fight Diaz the way he usually fights, he would have lost. And the thing about it is, fans wouldn’t respect him for that. We saw Donald Cerrone try to push the pace against Nick Diaz last December, and he got hacked apart for his troubles.

Did anyone praise Cerrone for being exciting? No. People ridiculed him for playing right into Diaz’s hands and threw the whole Jackson’s MMA team under the bus for coming in with such a piss poor gameplan.

As far as Georges St-Pierre goes, people need to let go of the idea that GSP was ever some sort balls to the wall striker who aggressively pursued knockouts; the guy won his UFC debut by wrestling Karo Parisyan to the ground and grappling him en route to a three round decision.

I’m not going to lie and say that St-Pierre hasn’t become a bit risk averse over the years, but he’s also not the absolute worst fighter in the word to watch either.

Whenever Condit and St-Pierre meet, I expect GSP to look to get the fight to the floor as often as he can and I expect Condit to try to look to fly through the air and knock St-Pierre unconscious whenever he can. If Carlos Condit comes out looking to point fight with St-Pierre, he’d be playing into his GSP’s strengths and he’d probably lose.

Elvin writes: Why was Dana White so quick to create an interim belt for the welterweight division but balked at the idea for an interim Light Heavyweight belt when Shogun was out for a year plus?

A: First of all, Shogun wasn’t out for a year plus; he wasn’t even out for a year. Rua won the UFC Light Heavyweight Title on May 8, 2010 and then next fought on March 19, 2011.

Georges St-Pierre suffered a knee injury that stopped him from defending his title last October and then another injury that prevented him from fighting last February. For a while it was doubtful GSP would even be able to compete in 2012. It’s already been over a year since GSP’s last title defense and if he has any sort of setback in his recovery, it could be even longer before we see him in the Octagon.

GSP was out for so long and there were so many contenders that it actually made sense for the UFC to create an interim championship. Well at least it did before Condit decided not fight again until St-Pierre returned.

Back in 2010, Rashad Evans was the clear number one contender and there weren’t even any other obvious contenders to fight him for an interim championship.

Yanni writes: I’d love your opinion on Anderson Silva vs. Jon Jones at 205lbs (assuming the fight to take place tomorrow, with both fighters uninjured).

A: Anderson Silva is probably the best MMA fighter we’ve seen to this point, but Jon Jones would be a horrible style match up for him; he just has too many physical advantages, including being 13 years Silva’s junior.

As great as Anderson Silva is, if Jones is overwhelming and physically dominating light heavyweights, why do people think bringing in middleweights is the answer? At the end of the day, even the greatest middleweight of all time is still just a middleweight.

UFC president Dana White talked about it after UFC on Fuel 2 on Saturday.

“The problem is, they don’t like the idea of us coming the same time this United Nations convention is going on,” he said. “The other problem is hotel rooms. Most of the hotel rooms are being taken up. And we don’t think, we know that the Anderson Silva-Chael Sonnen fight is one of the biggest sporting events this year, in the world.”

A lack of hotel rooms in a city the size of Rio is an ongoing problem. They are building hotels to deal with the upcoming Olympics in 2016 and the World Cup in 2014, but that won’t help the UFC this June.

Since the UFC generally plans their events well after conventions of all stripes are set, it’s surprising that this snafu would just come up now. Rio+20 has been planned since January 2011. Checking what’s going on in a town before booking an event is event-planning 101. That doesn’t matter if you’re planning a birthday party or a major sporting event.

This isn’t the first scheduling problem the UFC has faced this year. In January, they were forced to postpone a planned March event in Montreal because they didn’t feel the bouts were good enough for an event of that size. The postponement was the reason for the recently-ended six-week Zuffa drought.
